Real Heroes…

We can be heroes.  All of us.  We can and should start looking at ourselves that way.  It’s not reserved for the famous because to those in our circle…our children…family…friends…co-workers…people in need…we can be heroes.

Great acts do not have to be on the covers of magazines for them to make an impact.  From where I’m standing they are rarely heroic anyway.  Our culture worships the wrong people in my estimation.  We are captivated by bad boys and girls who do little more than light up a stage…or deliver a flawless line in a movie…or tramp their way around Cannes as the paparazzi lap up every disinterested pose.  (Why we don’t start looking at them as curiosities instead of heroes/role models I can’t say.)

Real heroes are the people I see every day.  They get up and go to work and try as hard as they can to squeeze a little more time out of a limited day to give their children a secure home…and a stable life.  They try to show the people they love how much they mean to them with simple gestures or a quick phone call.  They help the people in their life get back up when they’ve been pushed down…and if they can’t…at least they sit and listen so loneliness isn’t added to the mix.  Real heroes die with dignity and leave this world better than they found it because of the way they lived.

Heroes are everywhere and I think it’s time you realize you’re one of them.  I don’t care who you are…I know you’ve overcome things that you didn’t ask for…or you’re dealing with some heavy stuff right now…and you find a way to get back into the ring each and every day.  That is heroic…and I think you should get yourself a cape.

[I made a video about this a while ago called My Tribute to Heroes.  Take a look if you haven't seen it yet.  I still believe it.]

MY CHILDREN’S BOOK…

I wrote a book for my kids about a year after Laura was diagnosed. It was my way of telling them the truth about the situation...and to try to teach them to live in the moment. Because really...it's all we have.

I'm happy to say that Susan G. Komen-Milwaukee has endorsed the book and I donate a portion of each sale to The Race for the Cure.
