NOTE TO MY KIDS: I don’t think you read my stuff very often…but I want to clue you in on something: I’m as long winded and repetitive online as I am when I’m talking to you. This post will be different because I revisited someone’s blog…someone I “met” in the blogosphere a long time ago…and she reminded that brevity is probably the best way to make one’s point. I hope to do that here.
They don’t know do they? No offense to them…but they don’t know what any of our horrible past was like. They don’t know that it’s impossible for us to tell them how life looks different because of it…and so we don’t bother to try sometimes.
They don’t know that we don’t talk about it sometimes because more often than not it turns into an unwinnable debate. And they don’t know that we don’t think we’re better than them because that is our chosen response.
Ready or not here it comes…
They don’t know what they don’t know. You do…and I do…and while you’re good leaving it at that…it still sucks that oftentimes you’re going to take sh*t no matter which way you decide to respond to life’s situations, conversations, and certain people. (Especially if you decide NOT to respond.)
So ready or not…it’s another thing you’re going to have to deal with as you move forward with your lives. Ironically I think you understand this better than I do. Actually I’m sure of it. For what it’s worth…I think you’re doing it quite well.
Love,
Dad
